In the early history of Kyoto many ships from the Asian continent arrived at ports in Fukui prefecture on the Japan Sea. From there travelers journeyed overland through the mountains and towards Lake Biwa to arrive in the ancient capital. I've just begun a photographic series to explore the ancient highways the first travelers to Kyoto took. Here is one image from that series that I recently took. It is a scene that could have been 1,500 years ago.
